England Friendly – “Anyone for Cycling?”

Friendly International, 20 August 2008

England 2 Czech Republic 2

Capello’s masterly strategy to test to destruction England’s defensive frailties and attacking limitations was an unqualified success at a Wembley Stadium mercifully free of the usual elbow to elbow crowding of fellow fans.  The teams unswerving dedication to exposing themselves to counter-attack so that Capello could test potential flaws in his plans was remarkable and showed a new level of maturity and skill for the underpaid boys in white.  Not wanting to overshadow the achievements of the GB team in Beijing, England at no stage showed a lack of etiquette by taking the lead.  The subtlety of this approach, which will also have sown a seed of unjustified confidence in other members of England’s qualifying group demonstrates that the players, and the coach, have defined a new paradigm for the campaign.  Roll on Andorra!!
As one of the tabloids said the day after – ‘Anyone for Cycling?’
